Very old, but good memories of this terrain with a mediocre map.
Looking forward to seeing the Stefan Slutsky version.

The New London - Orient Point ferry is a great way to go to Long Island if coming from, say, Boston. But for those attending the WCOC meet Saturday (including Billygoat prep course) near Danbury, the Bridgeport - Port Jefferson ferry is a good choice.

Good news for anyone on the fence regarding our event. Park has confirmed that they will NOT charge participants the park fee. When you get to the hut at Caumsett tell them you are here for the orienteering and they should waive you through!

A Model/Training course is available for two weeks, April 15-28, at Muttontown Preserve. You may visit a couple of controls or complete the whole course offered, which corresponds to a Green. In case you do the latter, you may upload your result to Attackpoint page
The parking for model course is here
Download the Model/Training course map here
Model map print size - US Letter. Scale - 1:7,500, contours - 2.5 m.
Mapping - Stefan Slutsky, August-October 2022. Basemap: LIDAR, Orthophoto.
Due to a wet Spring, the water level is generally over 0.5m higher than at the time of mapping.
Muttontown Preserve is used both by hikers and horse riders. The latter have the right of the way. Do not approach horses from their side.

CLOSING - last call - if you are interested in coming this Sunday you might be able to slide under the wire! 80 names on the list as of this writing!

Eighty? Thats all? Eighty? That means there are hundreds going to miss a great experience in a like-new area.
Heck you've got a couple of JROTC orienteering teams out that way, one of which received a Wilson Award at least partly to help them get to orienteering events.
I hope they are among the 80 (or can be added to it).

Don't forget to spray up - ticks are out.
Apr 21, 2024 5:03 AM #

As of last night, contrary to Muttontown Preserve, no ticks were observed in Caumsett park.
The visibility in Caumsett park is still good, only 25-40% of leaves are out.

jjcote:
I didn't find any ticks at Muttontown, either (nor at Wildwood, though I didn't go off-trail there).

This was awesome, thanks everyone involved! Those of you that decided not to come based on fear of NY traffic, you lost out.
Apr 21, 2024 10:04 PM #

What feet said. Traffic through NYC was fine both ways. The only nonsense began at the CT line - which is par for the course regardless of which way you come back into New England.

Results and splits are at https://www.hvorienteering.com/caumsett-2024

It appears that two boxes on Green were not synched so splits may look a bit strange. I haven't had time to check the boxes yet so not sure which ones.

Also no apologies for being at the top of the resuts. Age has some privileges.
